What's the Point?

You may or may not have seen Harry Nilsson's philosophical, fantastical cartoon, The Point, which debuted on American television in 1971. With Ringo Starr narrating, it was an instant hit among children from that era (or so I hear).

The protagonist, Oblio, a small child is born into a village where everything and everyone has a point. Pointed heads, pointed buildings, pointed trees, pointed animals etc... So, oddly enough, Oblio is born without a point on his head and in order to fit into his society he begins wearing a pointed hat.

Eventually the evil count of the village banishes him due to his apparent lack of pointedness. He departs on his 'trip' into the pointless forest where he learns that its okay not to have a point and returns to the village with a valuable lesson. . .yada yada.

Here's a little peek into his magical trip in the forest.

Fittingly, the video doesn't really seem to have a point.

This post, however, does.

A couple of weeks ago I stumbled across the Gomma label who facilitates such radical artists as Munk and Golden Bug. While exploring their somewhat extensive catalog I found an artist named Oblio (happens to be half of In Flagranti) who rekindled my interest in dreamy 70's'esque electronic as well as the Harry Nilsson film.

He spent his younger years in New York but then moved to the San Francisco/Bay Area where he built his career. I got a copy of the Crystal Castles album. Its radtacular. This is the first song from the album. I love the vocal clips. So weird and thought inducing. My favorite kind of shit. Reminds me of Indians making love on a rainbow with Enya narrating.

Coachella Pt. 1

In light of the joyous occasion known as Coachella, I have supplied some dope tracks from bands you may not have heard of who will be rocking this years festival.

First up is SPIRITUALIZED. These guys are amazing. Thats about it. Think of Pink Floyd meets Spoon or something like that. I'm giddy waiting for their live show. This song is the title track off of their landmark album, "Ladies and Gentlemen We're Floating in Space."

Whats up everyone. It's Friday. School has started, and that means my little brown hairs are back on their path to becoming little gray hairs. So now it's time to rejoice over the fact that the work week is over and do the D.A.N.C.E.

First up today is a track of off Steve Aoki's new album. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the first track off of it is just a copy and paste of the Refused's, "New Noise." Major boo points for that. At any rate, this track is a LA RIOTS remix of SCANNER's, "Low Life," with a little taste of UFFIE mixed in. I am in love with her just like every dude who knows who she is. Eat it up. Cred goes to LA Riots, not Aoki.

What up to all of the ANIMAL COLLECTIVE fans. This next track is a remix of one of the better songs from PANDA BEAR's solo album. That doesn't bother me too much though. I love it anyway. And I hope you will too.

Fourth up today is a track from NEON BLAK. This starts out with some cheesy robot man and wife conversing about ass shaking. . .things can only get better from there, right? Last up today is a real gem. From the mastermind behind the fabulous KITSUNE, Shinichi Osawa brings us a remake of the CHEMICAL BROTHERS', "Star Guitar." The lovely ladies in AU REVOIR SIMONE do a fantastic job on vocals (I'm in love with them as well). I could dance to this shit all night. A fist pounding, crotch thrusting delight. Round Two

It's been four days. . .and yes, it's time for another dose of remix love. This blogging business has become more addicting than I had expected. Ah well. . . and away we go.

First up is remix of a FEIST song called, "My Moon, My Man" done by the rad dudes in BOYS NOIZE. I'm starting to realize how inescapable this talk box action is. Nearly every remix that catches my ear has at least a little taste of robot vocals in it. That being said, you could probably guess that this one has a fair amount in it. Take an amazing, beautiful artist like Feist and mix in a dirty vocoder sound and a fat beat and I'm all over it. This track is in the top 10 of 2007 for a lot of people.

Next is another KLAXONS remix. This song has been around for a bit, but if you can't get enough of JUSTICE, like myself, then this remix is for you. It sounds like it could have come straight from their album. What else needs to be said?

Moving along. . . this one's a little change of pace. WILLIE NELSON. He loves weed. I love him. U2. Not so much. Put em' together and what do you get? Magic. Even if you loathe Bono and his antics as much as I do, you can't deny the way this track tugs at the heart strings. Mix-up done by the talented DIVIDE & KREATE from Stockholm, Sweden. The last track I have for you today is a remix of, "Pogo" by DIGITALISM. If you haven't heard this song yet you've been under a rock for the last six months. At this point it's reached played out status. Every wannabe/hippie/indie chick at the club is begging for this song. This remix gives some new life to it and for that I am grateful. Done by the very talented MANO.

Do You Believe in Magick?

Here are a few different tracks I've been feeling lately. Some are old, some are new, but all of them are good. I promise.

The first track is a remix of an AIR song called, "Don't Be Light." The edit was done by Thomas Bangalter, one half of the legendary DAFT PUNK. The track in itself is very unlike Daft Punk; a little less punchy with ambient textures littered all over it. The piercing strings and guitar solo are a rad touch. Yes rad.

The next track is a remix of an older Franz Ferdinand song done by your favorite French dirty electro act- JUSTICE. This track is laden with heavy rock drums over chopped up vocal clips, a vocoder sample and Justice's very unique dirty bass sound.

The next song is the only original song of the five. It's called, "Give Me Every Little Thing," and its done by JUAN MACLEAN of James Murphy's DFA records. The song has a very epic, synthy feel to it and a nice driving bass line that really gets the blood flowing. I recommend checking out the full album if you dig this track. Very reminiscent of LCD and their disco punk style.

One act that I have been digging a lot lately is the reincarnation of Simian as SIMIAN MOBILE DISCO. I know I might be horrendously behind on that discovery but whatever. The boys in SMD do a remix of, "Magick" by the Klaxons. This one has the same chopped up vocal effect, but with more of a driving bass sound. The guys in SMD really know how to tear up a synth.

The last track is a real doosie. It's a remix of SNOWDEN's, "Black Eyes" done by DJ Castle VANIA from Atlanta, Georgia. I saw him spin after a MOVING UNITS show at the Echoplex last month and it was amazing. I think the remix blows the original out of the water with is catchy disco groove and cool robot vocal effect on the chorus.
