Tie Your Shoelaces to the Moon

They try to come off insane and completely absurd, but Gang Gang Dance compiled a few pleasantly melodic gems on their new album, "Saint Dymphna." If you know whats good for you, you'll grab a copy. It's going to be on my top ten albums of 2008 which should be popping up quite soon.

Here are some tracks to keep you occupied.

Gang Gang Dance - House Jam

Gang Gang Dance - Dust

Show Your Roots: Volume IV

So, as you may have noticed, the third installment of Show Your Roots was taken down. I suppose out of all the music I have posted on here over the last year or so, Kraftwerk is probably the most worthy of being copyright protected.

Oh well.

This week I'm going to take you to a magical place where roles have been reversed and geeky college dudes with synthesizers reign supreme. "Does this place actually exist?" you ask. My only reply is "Are We Not Men?"

D-E-V-O

Devo - That's Good

Devo - Beautiful World

Wise words from guys wearing trash bag suits and lamp shades on their heads.

Sugar Cane Shards In My Mouth

Italians, in fact, do it better. Glass Candy is the living proof of this statement. Atmospheric disco blips and crispy synthetic bass lines leave a pleasant taste in my mouth. That coupled with the hypnotizing siren song of the drop dead sexy Ida No makes them something to write home about. Though this album's about two years old now, I still felt the need to share some with you today.

Glass Candy - Miss Broadway (Remix)

Glass Candy - Candy Castle

Pink Floyd - If

This concludes the first edition of my new series of posts involving vintage drug-influenced gems.

In the Club

I love me some D.F.A. . . Jacques Renault and Marcos Cabral have released their new single, "Brooklyn Club Jam" under the name Runaway. This is by far the best track they have released and their first out on the infamous disco distributor. Here are a few different cuts for you to enjoy.

Runaway - Brooklyn Club Jam (Original Version)

What's the Point?

You may or may not have seen Harry Nilsson's philosophical, fantastical cartoon, The Point, which debuted on American television in 1971. With Ringo Starr narrating, it was an instant hit among children from that era (or so I hear).

The protagonist, Oblio, a small child is born into a village where everything and everyone has a point. Pointed heads, pointed buildings, pointed trees, pointed animals etc... So, oddly enough, Oblio is born without a point on his head and in order to fit into his society he begins wearing a pointed hat.

Eventually the evil count of the village banishes him due to his apparent lack of pointedness. He departs on his 'trip' into the pointless forest where he learns that its okay not to have a point and returns to the village with a valuable lesson. . .yada yada.

Here's a little peek into his magical trip in the forest.

Fittingly, the video doesn't really seem to have a point.

This post, however, does.

A couple of weeks ago I stumbled across the Gomma label who facilitates such radical artists as Munk and Golden Bug. While exploring their somewhat extensive catalog I found an artist named Oblio (happens to be half of In Flagranti) who rekindled my interest in dreamy 70's'esque electronic as well as the Harry Nilsson film.

Here are a few tracks to ride until the next 'Show Your Roots' post slated for later tonight.

Oblio - Escape

Oblio - The Crux of the Matter

Oblio - A Radical Change in Direction

The video for, "The Crux of the Matter" bares a striking resemblence to the animation in the point. Coincidince. . .I think not.

Show Your Roots: Volume II

So it should be no surprise to anyone that one of the innovators of electronic disco was gay. Shocked?! Me either. His name is Patrick Cowley. He spent his younger years in New York but then moved to the San Francisco/Bay Area where he built his career. Sometime after he moved there, he teamed up with Disco/Soul singer Sylvester James or "The Queen of Disco." The results were phenomenal. Enjoy!

Volume 2: Patrick Cowley

Patrick Cowley - Megatron Man

Patrick Cowley - Mind Warp

Show Your Roots: Volume I

There was a day when electronic dance music didn't exist. Yes. . . . Really. There were a few pioneers that paved the road for the electronic artists of the future to follow. Who were these visionaries you ask? Well. . . .

Volume 1: Giorgio Moroder

Giorgio Moroder - The Chase

Giorgio Mordoer - I Wanna Funk With You Tonight

A little video to acquaint you.

I find it kinda weird that these songs sound like they could have come out a week ago. Both were released in the 70's, but many of the producers out today follow the same mold this guy and his contemporaries established decades ago. I guess the same holds true for punk, metal, pop and other genres as well. In a way it diminishes the notion of tapping into a futuristic genre. Food for thought. . . . Or not.

Space Disco is Sooo Last Week

Since Hipster Runoff has been making frequent references to space disco, I felt it was about time to start searching for a new musical bandwagon to jump onto. I didn't have to do much searching. In fact it found me. NuJazz. I know this sounds like stuff you hated from the mid-nineties, but guess what. . .it's back. Welcome to 2k9.

Here's some sweet glitchy jazz stuff from Denmark.

Badun - Myg

Badun - Pulsen

Have a smooth, relaxing night.
Cheers-

Sacred Insects of the Dance Floor

Hailing from the romantic capital of the world we have some outrageously fun "robotic booty funk" made by an insect composed of one of the most precious metals in the world. On a side note, I enjoy this album more than any other electronic album I've heard in a very long time. Without further ado. . .

Golden Bug - Rocket City

Golden Bug - LOOKLOOKLOOK

For the remix of this track by one of the best in the biz, In Flagranti, click here.
(Not hosted due to RCRDLBL's Nazism.)

Please pay some respect to this amazing slice of disco madness here.

Feelings

Sometimes I feel emotion. Not too often, but it does happen occasionally. Butterflies. Flowers. Little candies with kute phrases. Fuzzy feelings in my stomach. Emotion. This first track pretty much sums it up. The second one isn't in English but I'm pretty sure it's about love. Who knows about the third. Anyhow. Enjoy.

Jon Brion and Deanna Storey - Little Person

Congregacion - Arrebol

Gerard Manset - Ils

James Pants - Dragonslayer

James Pants - Cosmic Rapp

Here we have his video for, "We're Through." One sweet low-budget video.

Funk and Butter

So I have two different types of disco tracks to lay on you today.

The first track is a slice of some funky-ass, hip-gyrating, make-ya-sweat disco.
The second is lower-tempo, space-cruisin', smooth-like-butter disco.

The Resurrection

I've been dropping the ball lately. No doubt it's been keeping people up at night. . . .

So if you haven't heard of Lovelock yet then you're not cool and we can't be friends. Think of the sweetest disco track and the trippiest Floyd jam making sweet love together. You guessed it. Lovelock. What I love about them is how they manage to sneak the word love into almost every song title. Props to XXjfg.

Lovelock - Dont Turn Away (From My Love)
(Cosmic Disco)

Lovelock - Love Reaction
(Cosmic Disco)

Next up is the single off of the new album by two of my favorite music makers.

(NuDisco/Easy Listening)

Morgan Geist from Metro Area featuring Adam Greenspan of Junior Boys.

Gang of Four - Not Great Men
(Indie Rock/Punk Rock/Dance)

Micheal Andrews - Time Travel (Donnie Darko Soundtrack)
(Ambient/Soundtrack)

Michael Andrews - Waltz in the 4th Dimension (Donnie Darko Soundtrack)

Bright Eyes - Lime Tree

Random Retro Tuesday

Gonna try something new here today.

Step into the time portal with me. . .

I know I'm a little late on this one, but Arthur Russell = my kinda dude. Twisted genius who was eons before his time and was never really appreciated. He was an amazing cellist and composer, but here are some tracks from his dance era.

Next up is some good cheesy dance music by the infamous Jeff Lynn and his Electric Light Orchestra.
These are a couple of their lesser known hits that have a special place in my ticker.

You may have heard of this last band. Twisted genius status- the sequel. David Byrne and the aforementioned Mr. Russell made some rad tunes together.
